UAE Tri Series

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosts a tri-series which featured by European teams Ireland and Scotland respectively. Each team meets both other teams twice in this series. U.A.E. is facing Ireland in the first two ODI matches this week. The first match between UAE vs Ireland scheduled to start at 9:30 AM Local | 11 AM IST on Thursday, 11th January 2018.

The home team is set to face the full member side for the first time in 24 years. UAE met Ireland in two match ODI series in March 2017 and lost both of those by huge margins. Now they have an opportunity to beat Ireland who has full member status currently. UAE has named 14-member squad for this home series which led by the all-rounder Rohan Mustafa. Former captain Amjad Javed has been dropped from the squad for this series. Captain Rohan Mustafa will open the innings for UAE. On the absence of Chirag Suri and Mohammad Qasim, the newcomer Ashfaq Ahmed is expected to make his debut and open the innings along with his captain Mustafa in this game. Mustafa is a well experienced top order batsman cum all-rounder and he will be the key player for UAE in this game. The most experienced batsman in the country Shaiman Anwar has a huge role to play in this home game. Anwar didn’t score lot of runs in 2017, but the 38-years old veteran could turn the table in 2018. Ghulam Shabber will take care of Wicket-keeper’s duty and also he will bat at crucial no. 3 in the batting order. He has scored 3 half-centuries in his last 4 batting innings in List A matches. That proves his value in the top order. The middle-order batsmen Rameez Shahzad and Muhammad Usman used to bat well in almost every game for the team. Especially, Muhammad Usman contributes well with runs in every match. Both of these middle-order batsmen has a chance to shine with runs in this game on Thursday. Adnan Mufti and Mohammad Boota are other two middle-order batsmen in the squad. Mohammad Boota is awaiting to make his international with this series while Adnan Mufti made his debut in ODI on last year and he was impressive since his debut.

The experienced seam bowler Mohammad Naveed will lead the bowling attack for UAE. Naveed is a key bowler who used to pick wickets in every match and also add some quick runs in end overs of batting innings. Qadeer Ahmed is the other pacer who has played 2 ODIs only in his international career and yet to claim his maiden wicket. It will be a good opportunity for Qadeer Ahmed to bring out his bowling talents. The medium-fast bowler Zahoor Khan who has taken 17 wickets in his 6 ODI appearances, will play a huge role in this game. He just picked 13 wickets in his last four 50-overs domestic matches. He is a wicket-taking bowler and expected to pick at least 2 wickets in this game if he selected in playing XI. The new comer Amir Hayat may need to wait for his debut. Two specialist spinners are there in UAE squad, they are left-arm spinner Ahmed Raza and the leg-spinner Imran Haider. Raza has played 15 ODI matches till date and he picked a tally of 15 wickets with best figures 3/30. He is also helpful with a bat in lower order. On other side, Haider has taken 16 wickets in 7 ODI matches with best figures 4/25. As UAE tracks supports spinners, both of them has a chance to get a place in the XI.

The visiting side Ireland will play under their regular skipper William Porterfield once again on this tour. Ireland’s most recent ODI series was against Afghanistan in December 2017 and won that series 2-1 successfully. Ireland has brought in Ed Joyce and Andy McBrine to the 15-man squad for this tour. The regular openers skipper Porterfield and the all-rounder Paul Stirling will open the innings once again for Irish team. Stirling was on sung when he played T10 championship domestic tournament in UAE last month. The well experienced opening pair has a chance to build a solid partnership for the team. If Stirling carry forward his recent form, he will gives you lot of fantasy points. The slow and steady William Porterfield is a key for Ireland. As Ed Joyce in the squad, Stuart Poynter might make a way for the veteran batsman. Andrew Balbirnie struggled to bat well against Afghan when he was in UAE last time around. Hopefully, Balbirnie will come an impressive knocks in this series. Ed Joyce might bat at no. 4 in this game. The experienced batsman has scored over 2300 runs in his ODI career and his highest score was 160 not out. Niall O’Brien will continue to keep wickets behind the stumps. He also bats at no. 5 in the batting order. He managed to score only 22 runs in 3 innings against Afghanistan, he needs to contribute much better in this tri-series. Gary Wilson also struggled against Afghan and scored only 14 runs in 3 innings. Some sort of chances for him to make a way for Ed Joyce in the XI. But, Wilson who known for explosive finish in end overs has a chance to get a place based on the experiences.

The star all-rounder Kevin O’Brien has a big role to play with both bat and bowl on this tour. He had a poor series against Afghanistan with both bat and bowl, but the all-rounder has an opportunity to rectify those errors and offers a quality all-round performances on Thursday. Stuart Poynter’s place in the XI is not secured at the moment. Simi Singh also expected to warm the bench on Thursday. As McBrine is back in the squad, Ireland is expected to go with two specialist spin options of George Dockrell and Andy McBrine. Dockrell was in prime form against Afghanistan. He didn’t shine only with a bowl, he also performed so well with a bat and surprised all. He may play a crucial role with a bat again on Thursday. The bowling all-rounder Andy McBrine back in the side after long time, hopefully he will perform well and utilize the opportunity which comes in his way. As UAE pitches supports spinners more, Ireland might prefer to play with 2 quick options. That case Boyd Rankin will earn a place with his experiences and there will a debate between Peter Chase and Barry McCarthy for one place in the XI. Barry McCarthy is the better bowler than Chase and he claimed 33 wickets in just 15 ODI matches since his debut in 2016. Jacob Mulder is the other bowling option in the squad for Ireland.
