NZ Super Smash

In match 21 of the ongoing Super Smash T20 Tournament, Canterbury Kings hosts Northern Knights in Christchurch on Friday evening. As of now, Canterbury Kings are at no. 4 in the points table while the visitors Knights tops the table with 20 points. It’s a crucial game for Kings as they requires at least 3 more wins to secure the spot in Knockouts. Match 21 between Canterbury Kings vs Northern Knights scheduled to start at 4:10 PM Local | 8:40 AM IST on Friday, 5th January, 2018.

Andrew Ellis led Canterbury Kings side have won 3 out of their first four matches in this ongoing season, but two back-to-back defeats in last 2 matches, made them down to no. 4 in the points table with 12 points. Kings has a better NRR (+1.189) among all other teams, but they are in a situation to win at least 3 matches in remaining 4 games. Black Caps player Henry Nicholls has joined and played last two games  for Kings. But as he returns for national duties, he won’t be available for this clash on Friday. Nick Kwant used to open the innings with Michael Pollard and he was sidelined due to the inclusion of Nicholls. Now, Kwant will be back to opening position again. Michael Pollard yet to play a big innings in the season. Hopefully, he will come with a good knock in this game. Chad Bowes had scored a match-winning 82 against Stags two weeks ago. But, he struggled in rest other matches and didn’t score 30 or more runs. He may get his form back at a right time on Friday. The wicket keeper batsman Tom Latham featured for Kings in the last game. But as he joins New Zealand squad for the ODIs against Pakistan, he won’t be available for this game. That means, Leo Carter will be the replacement in the XI. Carter was completely out-of-form at the moment as he scored only 3 and 5 runs respectively.

Middle-order players Cole McConchie and the wicket-keeper Cam Fletcher has a big job to do for Kings. McConchie has a good season with both bat and bowl. He has claimed a tally of 7 wickets in 6 matches and scored 112 runs with a bat. On other side, Fletcher contributed with runs in 4 out of 6 innings. He scored 170 runs in 6 innings and his highest score was 74* against Stags. The all-rounder Tim Johnston plays well with both bat and bowl. The off-spinner picked 6 wickets in 6 matches but as he comes to bat at no. 7, couldn’t get much of chances to prove his batting skills. Still he scores some quick runs in end overs. Due to the national commitments, Kings will miss a service of Todd Astle. Therefore, Will Williams is expected to be in the XI in place of Astle. Skipper Andrew Ellis has a huge role to play with a bowl in this game. He has taken 12 wickets in 6 matches and his best figures 5 for 16 against Otago Volts. The experienced Ed Nuttall and Jeremy Benton are other two bowlers in the side. Kings not yet named their squad for this game, so no wonder if there is any unexpected changes in their XI.

Five wins out of 7 matches puts Knights on the driving seat and they requires one more victory to safe their spot in the finals. The in-form side has strengthen their squad by adding BJ Watling to the 13-man squad. Watling makes his return after sidelined with an injuries for past 1 and half months. Anton Devcich and Tim Seifert will continue to take care of opening positions. Seifert continues his good performance in almost every match in this season. Both Seifert and Devcich notched up with respective half-centuries in the last game. The all-round efforts of Anton Devcich sealed a victory for Knights in the last game against Volts. Devcich is in supreme form right now after struggled in first few matches. Captain Dean Brownlie has a mixed form this year. He has scored 30+ runs knock twice but failed to score runs in rest of other matches. The young Brett Hampton plays a crucial role with a bat. Sometimes he comes to bat at 3 and sometimes comes at lower-middle-order. But wherever he bats, he plays aggressive cricket which give you lot of fantasy points.

The experienced Daniel Flynn has finally found some kind of form in recent matches. After struggles with scores 8, 4 and 0 in first 3 innings, he came with 47, 20 and 18* in last 3 innings he batted. The all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has a role to play for Knights with both bat and bowl. He picked 8 wickets in 7 innings and also scored 169 runs in 6 innings. He is one of the key player in the team and he will give you fair points in this game. Due to the arrival of BJ Watling, Knights may finally sidelines Nick Kelly from playing XI. Watling is expected to bat in the middle-order. England all-rounder Chris Jordan has a mixed form. He has picked a tally of 4 wickets in 4 matches. He also shines with a bat whenever he gets a chance. The leg-spinner Ish Sodhi re-joins Knights squad after completing the formalities for New Zealand in recently concluded T20I series. Sodhi is the new no. 1 T20I bowler in the ICC Rankings and he is expected to play a big role in Friday’s game against Kings. He’s picked 6 wickets in 4 matches for Knights before gone for national duties and he also scored a fighting half-century in the first game. His arrival will make a shuffle in Knights bowling unit. Either one of Brett Randell, Joe Walker and Sean Davey will make a way for Sodhi in the XI. Joe Walker bowled in the last game where he finished with 1 for 20 in 3 overs. Randell has picked 2 wickets but he gone bit expensive in that game. Sean Davey made his T20 debut in the last game where he bowled wicket-less two overs spell.
