First ever 4-Day Test – South Africa vs Zimbabwe – Squad Announced!

On this year Boxing Day (December 26), Cricket South Africa create history when their proteas team faces the neighbor Zimbabwe in the first ever four day test match. This match had been fixed after Cricket South Africa cancelled the inaugural season of T20 Global League two months ago. Squads of both sides has been announced recently and we gives the squad list here.



South Africa captain Faf du Plessis who fractured his finger in the series against Bangladesh back in October, makes his return to the squad. After that injury Faf didn’t participate in the recently concluded Ram Slam T20 Challenge tournament and there were a doubt on his availability for this match against Zimbabwe. But, Cricket South Africa confirmed their captain’s availability by naming him in the squad. The premium fast bowler in the country Dale Steyn has been named in the 14-man squad for this historical test match and this could be his first International appearance in 2017.

The most experienced explosive batsman AB de Villiers set to make his comeback in the longer format for the first time in almost two years. Ahead of the busiest home test series season against India and Australia this summer, AB is back in the side at right time. The regular members of South Africa test side Hashim Amla, Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada are all named in the squad for this test.

After made an impressive debut in the test series against Bangladesh, Aiden Markram keeps his name in the squad list. His recent form in the T20 tournament proves his agony to score runs and he is known as future of South Africa cricket. Theunis de Bruyn also holds his place in the squad as an extra batsman. After played enough of limited overs cricket, Andile Phehlukwayo finally made his debut in test format against Bangladesh. Now, he is all set to be a regular member of the test team as well.

The South Africans are not willing to take Zimbabwe lightly, so they have added all experienced players to the squad. The batting unit of RSA looks very solid with the run machine Hashim Amla and other batters like Elgar and Bavuma. Quinton de Kock will continue to keep the wickets and play in the middle-order. Fast bowler Morne Morkel has been named in the squad too. The bowling all-rounder Vernon Philander also back in the squad.

Zimbabwe Cricket Board gradually accepted the offer when it raised by Cricket South Africa. Graeme Cremer will lead the 15-man squad in this historic four day test. Squad has a plenty of experienced players in it. All-rounder Sean Williams missed out in the squad due to an injury issues. The most experienced batsman Hamilton Mazakadza continue to score runs in the top order. The medium-pacer Tendai Chatara has been recalled to the test side for the first time in three years.

Former captain Brendon Taylor who made a return to national team few months back, keeps his place in the squad. Taylor had an average series against West Indies on his return to test cricket. But this is going to be a right time for him to prove his worth in Zimbabwe cricket. Star players for Zimbabwe in recent times Craig Ervine and all-rounder Sikandar Raza in the side to strengthen the batting in middle-order.

All-rounder Solomon Mire gets a chance in the test squad for a second straight series. He offered some quality batting in the series against West Indies, has lot of things to prove in this game against mighty South Africans. Two wicket keepers Peter Moor and Regis Chakabva named in the squad, among those two Chakabva is expected to play primary wicket-keeper role while Moor is a back-up option. Tendai Chisoro is the only specialist spinner who have been named in this 15-man squad.

The pace unit contains players like Tendai Chatara, Kyle Jarvis, Chris Mpofu and Blessing Muzarabani. Just like Brendon Taylor, pacer Kyle Jarvis also made his return to the national side in the series against West Indies. The experienced bowler will lead the attack along with Chatara.
