IND v SL

2nd TEST – INDIA VS SRI LANKA – FANTASY PREVIEW

Rains on first two days and bad light on last hours of final day saved the test for visitors Sri Lanka in Kolkata. Nagpur is the venue for 2nd test between India vs Sri Lanka and no rain threat for this region of the country. Once again the home team, India are the favorites while Sri Lanka would look create a history by winning at Indian soil. 2nd Test scheduled to begin at 9:30 AM IST | 4 AM GMT on Friday, November 24.

INDIA :

Team India recovered well from that disappointing start on rain-hitting first two days. Except Pujara rest of the batsman had very hard time in the middle in the first innings. But the openers came back so well with the partnership of 166 runs for the first wicket in second innings and the captain Kohli scored his 50th International century on day-5 of the test match. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammad Shami gone through Sri Lanka batting order on the final session of Day-5 and shared 6 wickets among them. Team India did not start a test series in well note on day-1 but finished the game on very positive notes. Heading to the second test, Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were released from the squad. Shikhar Dhawan will not play only second test due to personal reasons while Bhuvi is not available for both remaining tests due to his wedding. Tamil Nadu limited overs Captain and the member of Sunrisers Hyderbad, all-rounder Vijay Shankar has been added to the squad as a replacement for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. On the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, India will open the batting with KL Rahul and Murali Vijay. Both of them last opened the innings together in the series against Australia earlier this year. Both are very strong batsmen at top of the order and expects good score from both Vijay and Rahul. Cheteshwar Pujara made a record of batted in all 5 days of test match in Kolkata. The test specialist scored fighting 52 runs in the first innings and 22 runs in a second. It was a rare game where Pujara did not score a hundred. He will back with bang and no wonder if he adds one more double-century to his test career.

Captain Kohli was so depressed after his dismissal for duck in the first innings of Kolkata test, then he nailed with 18th test ton in the second innings of the test. He faced only 119 balls to score 104 runs in that innings. Vice-Captain of the team Ajinkya Rahane had a bad game where he dismissed for 4 and 0 respectively. There are some chances for Rohit Sharma to earn the place in middle-order by replacing Rahane. But those chances are thin at the moment. Both spinners Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja remained wicket-less in both innings of Kolkata test which were very unfamiliar for them. Ashwin failed with the bat in both innings while Jadeja scored little useful 22 runs in the first innings. As this is the new game, top spinners in test cricket Ashwin and Jadeja are expected to bring their A-game in Nagpur. Wriddhiman Saha will take care of wicket-keeper duty and also the batting in lower middle-order. As Indian middle-order struggled in both innings of Kolkata test, the newcomer Vijay Shankar may be included in the XI in place of Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He is quality batsman and well capable of picking wickets with his fast-medium action. Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav are first choice pace bowlers and they will retain their places safely.

SRI LANKA :

It was a dream start for Sri Lankan team on the first day of Kolkata test. Their seam bowler Suranga Lakmal rocked with 3 wickets on that rain hit day. Overall, Lakmal picked a tally of 7 wickets in that test match in Kolkata. Apart from him, Dasun Shanaka picked 2 wickets in the first innings and 3 wickets in a second. Batsmen also shown some notable contributions in the first innings. Former captain Angelo Mathews scored useful 52 while Thirimanne posted 51 runs for his name. But it was Rangana Herath who batted at no. 9 scored 67 runs for the team and provided a solid lead of 122 runs in the first innings. Sri Lankans had a lot of positive moments in that match, except their batting performances in the second innings. Dimuth Karunaratne was Sri Lanka’s best batsman in the last test series against Pakistan. He managed to score only 9 runs in two innings of Kolkata test. But we can expect some good show from him in this test in Nagpur. Young Sadeera Samarawickrama started his first India tour with 23 off 22 balls in first innings, but unfortunately he dismissed for duck on the final day of the test. He deserves a second chance, hopefully he will get it. Thirimanne scored a half-century in the first innings but disappointed with only 7 runs in the second. Inconsistency is the big issue for Thirimanne and we might witness the same in this test too. Angelo Mathews who plays as specialist batsman in this series, contributed with 52 and 12 runs respectively. He may add one more half-century to his test records with this Nagpur test.

Captain Dinesh Chandimal and Niroshan Dickwella would be the real threat in Sri Lanka’s batting order. Chandimal dismissed for 20+ in both innings of Kolkata test but he is far better than those knocks and he could come with big knock in this test. Dickwell most probably the only in-form player across format for Sri Lanka. He scored 35 and 27 runs respectively in Kolkate, hopes for more runs from him in Nagpur. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka failed with a bat but he shined with a bowl in both innings. As said above, he claimed 5 wickets and was the second best bowler of Sri Lanka in Kolkata test. Bowling allrounder Dilruwan Perara generally contributes well with the bat but he scored only 5 runs in Kolkata test. With a ball he shined well and picked a tally of 3 wickets in that test. After very long time, top test bowler in the country Rangana Herath remained wicket-less in both innings of a test matches. He served only 8 overs in 2 innings. But remember he is the match-winner for Sri Lanka and he will be back with an amount of wickets in this game. Suranga Lakmal had a dream match after quite long time in his test career. He may look to maintain the momentum which he got in Kolkata by playing well here in Nagpur. Lahiru Gamage will retains his place unless Sri Lanka decides to go with extra spin option of Lakshan Sandakan.
