After facing whitewash in the test series, the home team Sri Lanka starts the fresh ODI series against India at Dambulla on Sunday afternoon. The visiting side India looks pretty confident after thrashed out Sri Lanka in test series. But remember, Sri Lanka stunned India when they faced each other in an ODI last time at Champions Trophy in June. The first ODI match between Sri Lanka vs India scheduled to start at 2:30 PM Local | 2:30 PM IST on Sunday, 20th August 2017.

Sri Lanka set to play One-day internationals under the new captain Upul Tharanga. He takes over the charge after Angelo Mathews quits the captaincy last month. Captain of test team, Dinesh Chandimal is not picked for ODIs. The in-form wicket keeping batsman Niroshan Dickwella generally opens the innings in ODI format and that the same are expected in this series as well. Danushka Gunathilaka played well in Champions Trophy and also in the series against Zimbabwe. He opened the innings along with Dickwella. Most probably the combination will continue against India in this series. Kusal Mendis has huge amount of responsibilities on his shoulders, especially after that test series loss. He will bat at his favorite position no. 3. In a test series, Tharanga struggled to score runs. But he was in fine form in limited overs format and that would help him to shine in this game. Tharanga batted at no. 4 in ODIs against Zimbabwe, he may continue to play in the same position. Former Captain Angelo Mathews contributed with bat alone in the test series, he did not bowl. But as its 50 overs contest, chances are high for him to bowl some short spell in this game. His batting in the middle-order is key for Sri Lanka and he will play huge role for Sri Lanka.

The all rounder Thisara Perera is back in the squad and he is expected to fulfill the place of injured Asela Gunaratne. Thisara used to play key role with both bat and bowl at home and that possibly happen in this series too. Chamara Kapugedera and Milinda Siriwardana also in the squad to strengthen the batting unit. Chances for both of them to sit out for this series opener. The young all rounder Wanindu Hasaranga made a name for himself in his debut series against Zimbabwe by claiming 8 wickets in 4 matches. He might play crucial role for Sri Lanka once again. The most experienced bowler Lasith Malinga struggled in recent times, but this is the right time for him to shine against Indians. There will be competition between Lakshan Sandakan and Akila Dhananjaya for one position. Sandakan has more possibility to get a game. Dushmantha Chameera will play as second seamer in this game ahead of Vishwa Fernando.

Team India all set to play ODI series after gaining plenty of confidence from Test Series. Virat Kohli led-side will look take revenge for that surprised defeat during the Champions Trophy back in June. India had made few changes in the squad comparatively to test squad. Veteran wicket keeper MS Dhoni is back in the ODI squad along with batsmen Manish Pandey and Kedar Jadhav. Spin duo Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal joined the squad for rested Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. Pacers Jusprit Bumrah and the new comer Shardul Thakur also in the squad to play ODIs. Shikhar Dhawan is in great form right now. After performing so well in Champions Trophy and in ODIs against West Indies, he shined in test series as well. He rewarded with man of the series award in the recently concluded test series against Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma will fight with KL Rahul for the opening slot. With the experiences, Rohit will get a game ahead of in-form Rahul.

Captain Virat Kohli will keep his favorite position at no. 3. Manish Pandey will be sit out, if Kohli decides to go with Ajinkya Rahane who played well in test series. As usual MS Dhoni will keep wickets behind the stumps and expects to bat at no. 5 in this game. Kedar Jadhav done his part so well at no. 6 in this format and he also shined with his part time off-spin bowling. The man with golden arm may have another surprising stint with bowl in Sri Lanka as well. The power-hitting all rounder Hardik Pandya had a dream debut test series recently and expects another fireworks from him on Sunday. As Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the squad, Axar Patel may warm the bench this time. Duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah will take care of pacemen duties. Both Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah are expected to play key role in this game at Dambulla on Sunday.
