SRI LANKA VS ZIMBABWE – TEST SQUADS ANNOUNCED!

After shocking the hosts in the ODI series, Zimbabwe looks more confident and set to play the one-off test match against Sri Lanka which begins on this Friday. Ranked 11th team in the ODI cricket, Zimbabwe clinched five match series 3-2 earlier this week which hurt Sri Lanka very badly. As test match is starts in two days time, both teams has been announced their test squads respectively.

Angelo Mathews was stepped down as Sri Lanka’s full time captain on Tuesday and that made the selectors to name the new captain ahead of the test match against Zimbabwe. Sri Lankan Cricket Board named Dinesh Chandimal as a captain for their test side. All rounder Mathews remains in the team as a player.

After providing solid batting performances in ODIs and T20s, the opener Danushka Gunathilaka earned a test call-up for the first time. Kusal Perera and Nuwan Pradeep missed out with injuries while selectors dropped Dhananjaya de Silva from the test squad.

Batsman Danushka Gunathilaka scored 323 runs at an average of 64.60 to top the run charts in ODI series against Zimbabwe and he also scored match winning 76 runs against India in Champions Trophy tournament. His current form in limited overs cricket gave him an opportunity to play in the longer format. Fast bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and Vishwa Fernando are return to the squad for the first time in this year.

Sri Lanka has strong batting unit in the squad which contains batsmen like Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal, Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne. Former captain Angelo Mathews and Asela Gunaratne are in the squad to provide all round performances.

The spin attack of Sri Lanka looks strong too as they brought back their test specialist Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera for this test. Lakshan Sandakan is the third spin option for Sri Lanka. Suranga Lakmal is expected to lead the seam attack which contains Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha Chameera.

The visiting team Zimbabwe is all set to play their first away test match in almost 3 years time. Captain Graeme Cremer will lead the side in the longer format too. Zimbabwean looks extreme confident after surprised the home team in the ODI series.

Zimbabwe has made few changes in their test squad as they brought in wicket keeper batsman Regis Chakabva, Natsai M’shangwe and Nathan Waller into the side. Bowler Natsai M’shangwe made his test debut against Bangladesh in 2014. He played only 2 tests so far and both of those matches were against Bangladesh in that same series. He returns into the test squad almost after 3 years. All rounder Nathan Waller is a cousin of batsman Malcolm Waller and he is awaiting to make his debut in test cricket.

Nathan Waller was named in Zimbabwe ODI squad quite few times, but he is yet to play international game across formats. Nathan’s first class records looks impressive and he performed well in recent domestic matches. Peter Moor took a wicket keeper’s role from Regis Chakabva last year and now both the players would fight for one spot in the squad.

Zimbabwe has well experienced Hamilton Masakadza and Craig Ervine in the squad to do batsmen duties. Malcolm Waller, Tarisai Musakanda and Ryan Burl are other batsmen in the group. All Rounders duty will be handle by Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza who are in very good form at the moment.

Tendai Chatara will lead the seam bowling attack and he has a company of Donald Tiripano, Chris Mpofu and Carl Mumba. Natsai M’shangwe has a chance to be in the XI as he offers leg-spin.
