Team India is in Sri Lanka to play 3 tests, 5 ODIs and only T20I and the tour starts with first test at Galle on July 26. BCCI has announced 16-member India squad for the test series two weeks ago while Sri Lanka squad has been announced on Sunday. Check the test squads below.
Virat Kohli, the captain of Indian side will lead the team once again on this tour and Ajinkya Rahane will act as vice-captain of the team. Murali Vijay who was injured during the test series against Australia in March, was named in the original squad along with his opening partner KL Rahul. But later on, Vijay declared unfit to be part of the squad as he need more time to get full fitness. Therefore, the selectors added Shikhar Dhawan into the squad in place of Murali Vijay.
Rohit Sharma played his last test against New Zealand in 2016, back in the test squad for the first time in 9 months. Abhinav Mukund is the reserved opener and he has to wait for his opportunities. The test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara played county cricket in this season and he is all set to go at no. 3. The wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha kept his place safe in the test squad and he could help the team with his solid batting in the middle-order.
The all rounder Hardik Pandya who was the regular member of India’s squad during the busiest home test season 2016/17. But he is yet to make a debut in Test cricket, he is in the squad and probably will get the chance as Sri Lanka’s pitches supports him. The prime spinners of Indian test team, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are in the squad to offer quality spin attacks. Both of them struggled in limited overs cricket in recent times, but they proved a lot with red ball cricket.
The left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav is the other spin option in the squad. He had a dream debut against Australia at Dharamsala. He is ready to go with his mystery spin attack. India has 4 men pace attack in their squad, names like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. All four of them has done their part well in India’s test season 2016/17.
Sri Lanka’s newly appointed test captain Dinesh Chandimal is not available for the first test, due to pneumonia. On his absence, the veteran spinner Ranagana Herath will lead the side at Galle. Sri Lanka Cricket Board has announced 15-member test squad for the first test which includes a return of Nuwan Pradeep and Dananjaya de Silva.
Sri Lankan test specialist opener Dimuth Karunaratne keeps his place in the squad along with the experienced Upul Tharanga. Danushka Gunathilaka is also in the squad who could replace Karunaratne at the top order. Kusal Mendis will continue to bat at his position no. 3. As Chandimal is not available for the first test, Dhananjaya de Silva would replace his captain in the XI and possibly bat at no. 4. Former skipper Angelo Mathews will take care of middle-order batting along with wicket keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella and Asela Gunaratne.
Both Dickwella and Gunaratne having a great season across the format and they have played a match winning knocks in recent test against Zimbabwe. Pace bowler Nuwan Pradeep is back in the side after missed a test against Zimbabwe due to mild injuries and he replaced Dushmantha Chameera in the squad. Malinda Pushpakumara is also back in the squad by replacing Lakshan Sandakan. Captain Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera are the front-line spinners for Sri Lanka.
Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando are the pace bowling options for Sri Lanka along with Nuwan Pradeep.
