Team India recalled left-hand opener, Shikhar Dhawan, to replace injured Murali Vijay for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka. The first Test of the three-match series will be played at the Galle International Cricket Club on July 26.
Talking about Dhawan’s selection as a replacement of Vijay, BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary said, “The All-India Senior Selection Committee on Monday named Shikhar Dhawan as the replacement for injured Murali Vijay in the Test team, which is scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series.”
Vijay, who missed Indian Premier League 2017 due to the twisted wrist which he received during Australia’s tour of India, has complained about pain in his right wrist while playing a preparatory match. In the wake of pain, the BCCI medical team advised him to take rest and continue his rehabilitation program.
The Tamil Nadu batsman, a prolific batsman in Test cricket, had missed only one match against Australia during India’s long home season of 13 Tests which had seen New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia visit India. As the grueling season got over, Vijay revealed that he had been playing with a fractured wrist.
As the IPL started, Vijay fled to England for surgery in London along with KL Rahul. Meanwhile Dhawan was dropped from the team due to lean patch. He last played a Test for India in 2016 against New Zealand.
In recent time, Dhawan has played for India in Champions Trophy and finished at highest run scorer in the tournament.
Dhawan so far has played 23 Test matches for India and scored 1464 runs at an average of 38.52. He has four hundred.
During the tour of Sri Lanka, India will play three-Test, five ODIs, and one T20I. In 2015, India has defeated Sri Lanka by a 2-1 margin to win the series after 22 years.
The team is as follows: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice captain), Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, R Jadeja, W Saha (Wicket Keeper), Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, M Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhinav Mukund.
