Zimbabwean cricket team tours Scotland and Netherlands this month and playing ODI series against both the sides. First travel to Scotland and playing two ODI matches on June 15 and 17. Following that, Zimbabwe plays 3 ODIs against Netherlands on 20, 22 and 24. After those two series, they will travel to Sri Lanka to play five ODIs and a test match.
The leg spinner Graeme Cremer will lead the Zimbabwe squad once again on these tours. Zimbabwe Cricket Board has announced 15 men squad for Scotland ODI series and that same squad will travel to Netherlands and Sri Lanka too.
The former captain Elton Chigumbura was not part of the squad, he was out of form for several months and he was sat out for many matches in 2016/17 season. The experienced Hamilton Mazakadza has played only one ODI in Zimbabwe’s last five ODIs this yearhas been selected to go to the Netherlands and Scotland in June and Sri Lanka later. Opener Chamu Chibhabha, who last played 50-over cricket for his country in November 2016, and who has only made two fifties in 23 innings, found a way back into the squad as well.
Masakadza’s only ODI in 2017 came against Afghanistan and he fell for 5 off 17 balls. However, the 33-year old made a hundred for Zimbabwe A against Canada in Harare a week ago to possibly persuade the selectors. Similarly, Sikandar Raza played only one game of the Afghanistan series – his only ODI in 2017 – but he too was backed to perform. Chigumbura, though picked for that series, did not play in any of the matches and his previous appearance in international 50-over cricket dated back to October 2016.
Mazakadza’s 23-year old brother and left arm spinner Wellington Mazakadza was left out of the squad that lost at home to Afghanistan 3-2. Accompanying him on the bench were seamer Carl Mumba and allrounder Nathan Waller.
Zimbabwe is set to play 10 away ODIs in next few weeks and these series present a significant opportunity for the team for they can help build momentum going into the qualifying tournament in April 2018 for the next World Cup. Zimbabwe is at no. 11 in the ICC ODI rankings right now and they have to earn their opportunities by performing well in these matches.
The experienced all rounder Sean Williams in the squad along with other all rounders Solomon Mire and Sikandar Raza. Peter Moor will handle wicket keeper’s duty in these tours.
