ICC Champions Trophy

We all thought that match of the year between two arch-rivals was on June 4th, but for a surprise the both teams are qualified for the Final of Champions Trophy 2017 and gives us chance to witness one more exciting match on this Sunday. Teams both India and Pakistan are set to face in a final clash of the ICC tournament for the first time since inaugural World T20 in 2017. The biggest match of the year, Champions Trophy Final between India vs Pakistan is scheduled to start at 10:30 AM Local | 3:30 PM IST on Sunday, 18th June 2017.

Team India performed as per the tag that they have in the tournament ‘defending champs’ and qualified to the Final in style. India’s Champions Trophy 2017 campaign started with the game against rivals Pakistan and it set to end with same Pakistan too! Virat Kohli and co., started with 124 runs (DLS method) win over Pakistan, then lost the next match to Sri Lanka which shocked the team. But they came back so well against South Africa and defeated the ranked one team by 8 wickets. In the semi-final, India outplayed their neighbor Bangladesh in all aspects of the game and won it comfortably by 9 wickets. Now, it’s a time to retain the trophy by defeating Pakistan on Sunday.

About the batting form and performances, the openers are in pretty good form. Both Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma scored more than 300 runs each in the tournament. Shikhar tops the list with 317 runs and Rohit followed him with 304. Their form is the biggest strength for India and the team expects same performance from them on Sunday. Shikhar and Rohit gave a solid opening stand of 136 runs in the group encounter against Pakistan and also continued the good partnerships in rest of the matches as well. Both openers are in form and both would be a key performers. Captain Virat Kohli’s form also strengthen the top order batting, who scored 3 half-centuries in 4 innings and remained unbeaten in all three of them. He scored 81* (vs PAK), 76* (vs SA) and 96* (vs BAN), if he continue his stunning form of Sunday, chances are high for him to score another big runs for his team. Yuvraj Singh bats at no. 4 and he got an opportunity to bat in only 3 innings. He was the man of the match in the group clash against Pakistan for his outstanding knock of 53 off 32 balls. He also scored 23* against South Africa and finished the game with six. He may play another big knock against his favorite opposition Pakistan on Sunday.

Former captain and Wicket Keeper MS Dhoni, All rounder Hardik Pandya and useful Kedar Jadhav are in the XI to take care of middle-order batting. Dhoni’s experience and Hardik’s power hitting would help the team to finish the innings in high note. Hardik’s bowling form is an worry for his captain, but as the XI is set and don’t want to disturb the winning combination, Hardik may keep his place safe. Kedar Jadhav just batted only against Sri Lanka where he scored 23 off 12 balls. He bowled well against Bangladesh in semi-final clash, he was the game changer for India at that time when he got a wickets of Tamim and Rahim. He is very handy with both bat and bowl and would keep his place safe. Ravichandran Ashwin remained wicket less against Bangladesh and conceded 54 runs in 10 overs. He is game changer and key bowler of India, so he is expected to do better job on Sunday. Ravindra Jadeja also has job on hand on Sunday. He is the most wicket-taker of India in all Champions Trophy tournaments and he should respond well on Sunday. Pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are in very good form and both picked 2 wickets each in last 2 matches. Bhuvi picks wickets in first power-play and Bumrah does it in death overs. Both of them are key for India on big Final day. Apart from them Mohammad Shami has some chances to be in playing XI, if India decides to go with extra pacer in place of Hardik Pandya.

An amazing come back in the tournament lifts Pakistan to the maiden Final of Champions Trophy tournament. This is the biggest achievement of Sarfraz Ahmed who took a captaincy from Azhar Ali earlier this year. As we see above, Pakistan started the tournament with heavy defeat against India where they lost by 124 runs. Cricket world started to talk that no.8 team in the ICC ODI rankings would eliminate from the tournament early and cheaply. But, Pakistan players fought hard and won rest of two group matches against mighty South Africa and Sri Lanka to qualify for the semi-final. In big semi-final clash, Sarfraz and team thrashed the in-form home team England by 8 wickets. Now they are in their first ever Champions Trophy Final and meets their biggest rivalry India on Sunday.

Bowling are the major strength of Pakistan. In the group match against India, bowlers failed to deliver and later on the team lost the game in big way. But they came back very strong against South Africa and contained the opposition for 219 for 8 in 50 overs. They also shown the similar performances against Sri Lanka and England as well. Hasan Ali, the pacer used to bowl after the first power-play, picked hat-tricks of three wicket hauls in last 3 matches. He has total of 10 wickets in 4 innings and leads the most wicket-taker charts. He is not only a wicket-taker, also an economical bowler. He picked 3 for 24 (vs SA), 3 for 43 (vs SL) and 3/35 (vs Eng) in the last 3 matches. He would be a major threat for the opposition on Sunday and he possibly gives maximum bowling points to fantasy users. Junaid Khan who came in place of Wahab Riaz after India match, picked total of 7 wickets in 3 matches. He is also in good form and could be a key player on Sunday. Promising left hand pacer Mohammad Amir is back to fitness and ready to play on Sunday. He missed out the semi-final match against England due to a back spasm. He bowled good spell against India in that group match and possibly do much better job on Sunday. Imad Wasim, the left-arm spinner yet to impress with wickets. He picked only 2 wickets in the tournament and those came against South Africa. There is a big question whether Pakistan will play with Shadab Khan or Fahim Ashraf on Sunday or Will go with both Amir and Rumman Raees? Chances are high to go with Fahim Ashraf as he offers power-hitting in the lower middle-order.

Pakistan openers Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman are in good form. Especially Fakhar Zaman who smashed back-to-back half-centuries in last two matches and remember he made his ODI debut against South Africa in this tournament. He has huge role to play and he may play another impressive knock on Sunday. Azhar Ali also smashed half-century against England. He scored 50, 9, 34 and 76 runs respectively in the tournament. It’s a mixed tournament for Babar Azam. In the last match he impressed with well timed shots and remained unbeaten with 38 runs. Mohammad Hafeez had very tough time with bat, then he smashed 31 off 21 balls against England. He is the dangerous player on Sunday based on his experiences. Most experienced player in the group, Shoaib Malik yet to play big knocks in the tournament. He generally plays well against India, if he play similar knock on Sunday then he would change the game on his team’s favor. Captain Sarfraz done his job well with the captaincy and also played match winning knock against Sri Lanka. His innings was the major reason for Pakistan to overcome the hurdle against Sri Lanka and qualify for the knock out stage. He is such a class batsman and once he gets a chance to bat, he will do a job for his country.
