ICC Champions Trophy

After the whitewash in three match T20I series, the visitors Afghanistan faces West Indies in three match ODI series which starts in St. Lucia on Friday afternoon. The home team West Indies has made 10 changes to their ODI side after that 3-0 win in T20I. Afghanistan who shown good spirit in limited overs format looks to register the win on the tour in this game. The first ODI between West Indies vs Afghanistan is scheduled to begin at 2:30 PM Local | 12 AM IST (next day) on Friday, 9th June 2017.

West Indies has played under the captaincy of Carlos Brathwaite in recent T20I series. Now, the ODI captain Jason Holder takes charge and leads the team once again in ODI series. Jason Mohammed, Evin Lewis and Rovman Powell are the players who features in both T20I and ODI series against Afghanistan. Jason Holder and his side yet to win the ODI series at this home season. First, England defeated West Indies with 3-0 whitewash and then Pakistan defeated West Indies by 2-1. Now its a chance to back in winning ways for West Indies as they play against Afghanistan who are lower in the ranking than West Indies. The squad has good mix of batters and bowlers along with few experienced players like captain Holder.

The hard-hitting opening batsman Evin Lewis is set to open the innings and his opening partner would be Kieran Powell. Both of these players has played well against Pakistan in the first ODI. But, failed to score big runs in the next 2 matches. It is challenge for these openers to play solid partnership in the top order in this series. Shai Hope will do wicket keeper’s job behind the stumps and also he is expected to bat no. 3 in the batting order. He has scored well made 71 runs in the last ODI that he played against Pakistan in April. He expected to play big knock on Friday. Jason Mohammed and Jonathan Carter done a brilliant job for West Indies against England and Pakistan. Mohammed scored two half-centuries against Pakistan in three match series and his high score was 91 not out. All rounder Jonathan Carter played really well against England where he scored 52, 39 and 46 runs respectively in the middle-order. He did not has good outing against Pakistan, but he could play big innings and also steady the team in the middle overs. The hero of West Indies test team since his arrival in 2016, all Roston Chase has named for the first time in ODI squad. He is expected to play his debut ODI game straightaway on Friday. That means he could be the possible no. 6 for West Indies. His all round performances are much needed for the team and that’s the key factor too.

West Indies did not use Rovman Powell much in ODIs and that trend is expected to continue as Chase in the squad. Captain Jason Holder is the other all round option in the squad. He is well experienced right now and the team expects all round performances from him on Friday. Devendra Bishoo and Ashley Nurse are the specialist spinners in the squad and both of them kept their place safe in the ODI squad. The off-spinner Ashley Nurse had a pretty decent outings against both England and Pakistan in ODIs. He picked 6 wickets against England in three innings and also picked 6 against Pakistan. He contributed so well with bat too, scored 128 runs in last 6 ODI innings. He is a key bowler for West Indies. Leg-spinner Bishoo did not pick much wickets in those series, but he used to bowl useful spell for his team at good economy rate. Shannon Gabriel, Miguel Cummins and Alzaari Joseph are the pace-men in the side. Gabriel is their front-line pacer and he delivered well at time for the team. Alzarri Joseph is expected to get the chance ahead of Cummins. Joseph has bowled well in ODIs and also in Tests against Pakistan. That may give him an another chance in the XI.

After so many dominating performances in recent tours against several Associate teams and against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan has faced first whitewash in T20I series earlier this week. It is time for some redemption and Asghar Stanikzai led-side is ready for the first battle of three ODIs on Friday. Afghanistan side brought ODI specialist Rahmat Shah into the squad along with Nasir Jamal and Afsar Zazai. Remember Afsar Zazai was in T20I squad as a reserved player, now he is in main squad for ODIs. The Afghan side has involved in two ODI series this series and both series contained 5 matches each. The first one was against Zimbabwe in February and the most recent one was against Ireland in March. Afghanistan won both the series 3-2 respectively. But, both Zimbabwe and Ireland are lower than Afghanistan in the rankings. As they faces West Indies at their home, it is important for Afghanistan to start the series with win especially after those disappointing performances in T20I series.

The experienced wicket keeper Mohammad Shahzad is not on this tour and that’s the big setback for Afghanistan. We have seen those efforts in T20Is and that could probably repeated in ODIs as well. The regular opening batsman of Afghan’s limited overs side, Noor Ali Zadran will open the innings. Either Javed Ahmedi or Usman Ghani are expected to open the innings along with Noor Ali. The specialist ODI player, Rahmat Shah will play at his regular position no. 3. Rahmat is one of the key player of Afghan in this format, he has played match winning knocks in multiple occasions for Afghanistan. He smashed 2 centuries and 5 fifties in his 25 ODI innings so far. He is expected to play deep innings for his team and sets up good total. Captain of the team Asghar Stanikzai was not in good touch in T20I series, he is in an urgency of score runs to avoid an another whitewash on the tour. Samiullah Shenwari and Mohammad Nabi are the experienced all rounders in the Afghan’s middle-order. Shenwari scored only 7 & 0 in two T2oI on the tour, he has plenty of experiences and he may come with good innings on Friday.

The star all rounder Mohammad Nabi has huge role to play in this ODI series. Nabi is in top 10 ranking list of ICC ODI rankings for bowlers. His off-spin do plenty of magics generally in this format, but he has to bowl well against West Indies. His batting is also key for the side and he needs to bat deeply and finish it off well on Friday. On the absence of Shahzad, Safiqullah would handle gloves work behind the stumps and he will bat at no. 7 for his team. He done well in the recent ODIs against Ireland at this position back in March and expects the same from on Friday. The magical and teen sensation of Afghanistan, Rashid Khan bowled well economical spells in T20I series. But he did not pick as many as wickets in that series. He could come back much stronger and possibly bowl big wicket taking spell on Friday. The left arm spinner Amir Hamza also done a good job in T20 matches, hopefully he do carry on his form in this limited overs series too. If Asghar decides to add all rounder Gulbadin Naib in the XI, they might go with one specialist pace option. If no Naib in the XI, then chances are high for both Dawlat Zadran and Shapoor Zadran to play. Both are experienced and they could deliver for their team.
