After defeating Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday night, Kings XI Punjab holds their chances in playoffs and they need to win those two remaining matches in the league stage. Kings XI Punjab has an another huge task ahead of them on this road to playoffs when they faces table-topper and in-form Mumbai Indians at Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. The 51st Match between Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab is scheduled to start at 8 PM IST | 2:30 PM GMT on Thursday, 11th May 2017.

MUMBAI INDIANS :

The home team is already qualified for the playoffs and lead the points table very strong at the moment. As of now, MI has 18 points with 9 wins in 12 matches and they have a NRR of +0.903 which is the highest NRR right now. As two more matches to play in the league stages, MI has bright chances to finish with 22 points and 11 wins. For that, they have to beat KXIP on Thursday. After defeating Daredevils with a record margin of 146 runs, Mumbai Indians lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last match which cost their momentum a bit in the season. Rohit Sharma and team has to re-group quickly and show their dominance in front of their home crowd as they are playing the last home match on Thursday.

MI’s batting was in top gear against Daredevils, Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard smashed all over the park and helped the side to post 212 runs in 20 overs. But, in the match against Sunrisers, it all gone in wrong way for MI and managed to score only 138 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs and lost that match by 7 wickets. Captain Rohit Sharma was the only batsman who shined with the bat and scored half-century for MI in that game. As they are back to Mumbai now, MI needs to fire up and defeat KXIP in convincing passion to maintain the momentum in the season. Jos Buttler would leave to England ahead of Playoffs, therefore chances are high for MI to keep Simmons in the top-order and stabilize the lineups. Parthiv Patel done his part well last 3 matches and he would continue the same on Thursday. Youngster Nitish Rana was the talk of IPL in first few weeks of the season, but now he is completely struggling to score runs. He scored 8, 3, 19, 27 and 9 in last 5 innings that he batted, which means there are some chances for MI to re-call Ambati Rayudu into the XI.

All rounder Krunal Pandya missed out in last 2 matches. As MI lost the game to Sunrisers, he has plenty of chances to be back in XI and replaces Karn Sharma. The experienced Kieron Pollard has played one of his best IPL knock against DD, but he disappointed with just 5 runs against SRH other day. He is key factor on MI and he could score plenty of runs in this game. Hardik Pandya also used to play lot of handy knocks for MI this season and his bowling also helps the side with crucial breakthroughs. Mitchell McClenaghan bowled nicely against SRH, as he is the most wicket-taker for MI – McClenaghan would play a key role once again. Harbhajan continued to show his good job and he bowled so well in last 2 matches for MI. Young pacer Bumrah also done a good job for his team. He is expected to bowl an another good spell against KXIP on Thursday. Lasith Malinga has chances to leave MI for international duties. His national captain Angelo Mathews has left to Sri Lanka for the preparatory camp, so chances are high for Malinga to misses out too. In that case, Mitchell Johnson would be the first choice replacement for MI.

*Latest update : Malinga will stay with MI for the entire season after got permission from his cricket board.

KINGS XI PUNJAB :

Glenn Maxwell and his team members are still in the race to qualify for the playoffs and they need to win both remaining matches in good margin. Currently, Kings XI Punjab is at no. 5 in the points table with 6 wins in 12 matches. They have total of 12 points at NRR +0.280. Winning both matches are not enough for them and their playoff chances are rely on other top teams performances in remaining matches. As expected both Hashim Amla and David Miller are left to South Africa to join ODI squad and they have no more part in this IPL season. The man who scored two centuries in the season for KXIP, Hashim Amla’s unavailability is the huge loss for KXIP and it was shown in the previous game against KKR. Still KXIP managed to beat KKR, thanks to Mohit Sharma and Rahul Tewatia who played his first match of the season.

Martin Guptill’s poor run continues as he failed to score big runs in last 3 innings at top of the order. As huge task is ahead, KXIP wants his power-hitting opener to take responsibilities and provide run fest at Wankhade on Thursday. Manan Vohra was back in the XI against KKR and he managed to score quick 25 runs off 16 balls. He also needs to long innings for KXIP’s success. Shaun Marsh has played couple of amazing knocks in the season, he is expected to play some fine innings in this game. Wicket keeper Wriddhiman Saha who was struggling to score runs found some sort of form on Tuesday and scored sensible 38 off 33 balls in crucial time. Captain Maxwell came with 44 runs off 25 balls in the last game which helped the team to post decent total on the board. He is the key player of KXIP, especially at grounds like Wankhade. He needs to fire-up and some big innings are expected from him. Bowling all rounder Axar Patel contributed well with bat, he played some amazing knocks at the end overs. But he struggled for runs against KKR where he scored 8 off 10 balls. He might be back to hit mode and score runs against MI. Rahul Tewatia played his first game of the season against KKR on Tuesday and he scored very crucial 15 runs in the end overs which helped KXIP to post target over 160 runs.

The bowling unit’s splendid effort was the main reason for their triumph against KKR on Tuesday. Except the new comer in the XI Matt Henry, all other bowlers bowled at under 8 runs per over. It was the first game for New Zealander Henry, but he failed to impress as he conceded 31 runs in 3 overs. Eoin Morgan has joined KXIP again, either Morgan or Darren Sammy would replaces Matt Henry in the XI. Sandeep Sharma who shown stunning performances in three matches in a row, bowled wicket-less spell in the last game. Before KKR game, Sandeep has picked 9 wickets in 3 matches and that form might be back against MI. He is a key bowler for KXIP in this encounter. Another front-line pacer Mohit Sharma bowled nicely again and picked two crucial wickets at crucial time of the match against KKR. He generally bowls expensive overs, that could very much possible against MI at Wankhede. One of the wicket-taking bowler of this unit, Axar Patel remained wicket less against KKR. But, he bowled well controlled spell of 4 overs. He could be the major bowler for KXIP in this game. The new comer Rahul Tewatia turned the match in his team’s favor first with bat and then with bowl. He bowled splendid 4 overs where he taken two wickets for just 18 runs. That spell turned into KXIP favor and helped them to stay in the competition. With that spell, Tewatia is expected to keep his place safe in this game.
