Pakistan Super League

On fantastic Friday, Pakistan Super League – Season 2 hosts two important matches at Sharjah. The most famous stadium in the region, Sharjah Cricket Stadium hosts first double-header of the season. In the first match of the day, Peshawar Zalmi meets Quetta Gladiators. The match between Peshawar Zalmi vs Quetta Gladiators is scheduled to start at 3:30 PM Local (U.A.E.) | 5 PM IST on Friday, 17th February 2017.

Peshawar Zalmi, the team which finished at top in points table last year, is leading the chart at the moment. Zalmi has played 3 matches in Dubai leg on last week. In those 3 matches, Zalmi won 2 and lost 1 game. Darren Sammy and co. met Islamabad United in season opener on last Thursday. In that game Zalmi batsmen were done a good job and posted 190 runs on the board. Wicket keeper Kamran Akmal’s 88 off 48 and opener Dawid Malan’s 43 runs helped the side to post big total on the board. But, while defending the target, Zalmi bowlers were gone expensive and that cost the team. In the end Zalmi lost a game to Islamabad United. Fast bowler Junaid Khan bowled at 13 RPO in that game.  An experienced player in the group Shahid Afridi’s expensive spell  also hurt Zalmi too badly.

On last Friday night, Zalmi met Karachi Kings. Zalmi bowlers were turned out quickly and controlled the opposition all the way possible. Batting All rounder, Mohammad Hafeez bowled an excellent spell, where he picked 2 wickets for just 7 runs in 3 overs. Experienced left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz picked 2 for 23 in 4 overs spell. This time, Afridi bowled a good spell but he remained wicket less. Rest of the bowlers also done a good job and shared a wicket each. While chasing a target, opener Mohammad Hafeez was got out for second consecutive duck. This time Kamran Akmal gone for zero and pushed Zalmi into trouble. But, English limited overs captain Eoin Morgan took the team to victory with his knock of unbeaten 80 runs off 57 balls. Dawid Malan and Haris Sohail were supported him and helped the team to register a first win. In third match of Zalmi, once again bowlers came into act and this time they bowled out the opponents for just 59 runs.  Hasan Ali’s 3 for 23 and Chris Jordan’s 2 for 8 helped Zalmi to control the opposition. Asghar, Hafeez, Wahab Riaz and Afridi shared a wicket each in their short spells. In that tough pitch, Zalmi batsmen also struggled to score runs. But, in the end they chased down the target in 17 overs with 3 wickets in hand.

On Friday, Zalmi gets more boost as they welcomed Bangladesh’s opening batsman Tamim Iqbal to the team. Tamim who completed national duties is in Dubai with Zalmi and he would replace Dawid Malan at top of the order. Sohaib Maqsood replaced Haris Sohail in last match, but he got out for Zero. Zalmi might give him an another chance on Friday. As bowling unit did well, no changes are expected unless any player get injured on match day.

On Wednesday night, Quetta Gladiators faced their first loss in the season. After playing 3 matches, Gladiators are at second place in the points table with 4 points. As Gladiators meets Zalmi on Friday, it is going to be a cracker of first and second in points table. If Quetta manage to defeat Zalmi, they it would take Quetta to top of the table. In their first game, Gladiators managed to win the game by 8 runs against Lahore Qalandars. In that low scoring thriller, Gladiators managed to score 136 for 9 in 20 overs after the collapse of top order. Rilee Rossouw was the lone performer for Gladiators with a bat on that game, who scored 60 useful runs for his team. While defending the low target, left-arm spin duo of Nawaz and Hasan Khan helped their side to take a victory. Both of them picked 2 wickets each and bowled economical spells. All other bowlers also supported them by sharing a wicket each. In the end Sarfaraz and Co. started the season with thrilling win.

In their second game, Quetta Gladiators bowlers performed well once again. They managed to control Karachi Kings for 159 runs. Anwar Ali bowled an expensive spell, also Mohammad Nawaz. Rest of the bowlers bowled decent spells, especially all rounder Thisara Perera picked 3 wickets for 34 runs in 4 overs spell. English bowler Tymal Mills also bowled well and picked 2 wickets for 21 runs. Then while chasing a target, once again Rilee Rossouw turned out as a match winner for Gladitors who scored 76 not out in 160 runs chase. Skipper Sarfaraz also played a good knock and scored 56 runs in 42 balls. Top three batsmen form were the big concern for Gladitors, especially Kevin Pietersen who walked back without scoring. On Wednesday, Gladiators met the defending champions Islamabad United. In that game, Openers Asad Shafiq and Ahmed Shehzad gave a good start comparatively to other 2 innings. Shehzad scored quick 26 runs and Shafiq scored 45 runs which was the top score in the innings. Once again Kevin Pietersen got out for golden duck and it’s two golden ducks in a row for this experienced batsman. This time, Rossouw managed to score only 7 runs and Sarfaraz scored 12 runs. With the help of handy knocks by Mahmudullah and Perera, Gladiators managed to post 148 runs in 20 overs. While defending the scores, Mohammad Nawaz was back in form and picked 2 for 18 in his 4 overs spell. Hasan Khan also bowled well and picked a wicket for 24 runs. Fast Bowler Umar Gul who played the first game this season picked a wicket for 34 runs in 4 overs. In the end, Islamabad United defeated Quetta Gladiators by 5 wickets and that was the first loss for Gladiators in the season.

Mahmudullah’s presence is a good thing for Gladiators. He was in good form during BPL few months ago and also performing consistently for his national team in this season. Pietersen’s poor form is a big concern for Gladiators now. He scored 3 runs in 3 innings so far. Luke Wright is in line to replace Kevin in XI. Chances for Gladiators to give him an another chance on Friday or they may give him a rest for one game. Based on the pitch condition, Anwar Ali could make a way for Zulfiqar Babar or Mir Hamza. Otherwise no changes are expected in this bowling line-up.
