ODI – Sri Lanka Vs West Indies – Preview

Tri Nations ODI between Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and West Indies is the only One-day International series happening in Cricket World at present. Zimbabwe hosts this Tri-series at Harare and Bulawayo. The series were kick started on Monday with the contest between Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. In that match, Sri Lanka won comprehensively by 8 wickets. On Wednesday, Sri Lanka meets West Indies in the 2nd match of the tri-series.

Both Sri Lanka and West Indies are struggling to maintain winning form in ODIs for long time now. West Indies hosted tri-series back in June with Australia and South Africa. The Caribbean team qualified for the final in that series, but they not succeeded in the final. Then, they met Pakistan in three match ODI series last month in UAE. Pakistan won the series with clean sweep against West Indies. So, multiple changes were made in this current West Indies squad. They will compete in this series without their experienced players like Marlon Samuels, Darren Bravo, Dinesh Ramdin and Kieron Pollard. Some of young players named in the squad like Shane Dowrich, Shai Hope, Rovman Powell and Jason Mohammed.

Sri Lanka were struggled in the ODI series against England in England back in June 2016. They lost ODI series to England 0-3 (1 tied and 1 no result). Then, Sri Lanka faced Australia in five match ODI series at home in August. Australia won the series 4-1. As their regular Captain Angelo Mathews and Vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal were injured they came to Zimbabwe under the captaincy of veteran Rangana Herath to play 2 test matches. With the clinical performances Sri Lanka won the series 2-0. Now, they are taking those confident in to limited overs cricket and playing in this tri-series. Upul Tharanga leads the side as captain in this series.

The most experienced batsman in this Sri Lankan line-up, Upul Tharanga leads the team for the first time. After Mathews pulled off from Zimbabwe tour with multiple injuries, Tharanga got an opportunity to be captain of the team. He is 31 years old and he is playing International cricket for more than a decade. He made his Test and ODI debuts in 2005. In his 11 years ODI career, he played 189 ODIs and scored 5526 runs. His highest ODI score were 174*. He used to open the innings for his team, but nowadays he used to come to bat in the middle order. As a captain and experienced batsman of the squad, Tharanga becomes Key player of the side.
