Sri Lanka Cricket team visiting Zimbabwe to play two match test series against the host and also participating in a Tri-series, featuring Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and West Indies. The tour starts with 1st test match on 29th October, 2016 at Harare. Sri Lanka Cricket announced their 14-member test squad, recently. The regular captain Angelo Mathews named in the original squad. But, Angelo Mathews not yet recovered from the torn calf injury which happened during the 4th ODI against Australia in August. He is expected to be out of action for three weeks and is doubtful for tri-series too.

Sri Lanka’s regular Vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal, was also unavailable for the two test series because of a thump injury sustained during a domestic game which forced him to undergo surgery. As both Captain and Vice-captain of the team are out of the squad due to injuries, Sri Lanka Cricket announced a new Captain for the test series. The 38-year old, lead spinner of the team Rangana Herath is going to lead the Sri Lankan test team for the first time as a Captain.

Herath announced his retirement from limited overs cricket in April this year to give more focus on test cricket. He played a important role in a recent test series against Australia by picking 28 wickets in three test matches. In his 17-years test career, he makes his debut as a Captain in his 74th test!
